POLE BENDING. Pole bending is a timed event.
(a) Each contestant will begin from a running start, and time shall begin and end as the horse’s nose crosses the line. A clearly visible starting line must be provided. An electric timer or at least two watches shall be used, with the time indicated by the electric timer or the average time of the watches used by official timers to be the official time.
(b) The pole bending pattern is to be run around FIVE poles. Each pole is to be 21 feet (6.4 meters) apart, and the first pole is to be 21 feet (6.4 meters) from the starting line. Poles shall be set on top of the ground, six feet (1.8 meters) in height, with no base more than 14 inches (35 cm) in diameter.
(c) A horse may start either to the right or to the left of the first pole and then run the remainder of the pattern accordingly.
(d) Knocking over a pole shall carry a five-second penalty. Failure to follow the course shall cause disqualification. A contestant may touch a pole with his or her hand in pole bending.
(e) A five-second penalty will be assessed if the hat or helmet is not on the exhibitor's person for the entire time the exhibitor is in the arena in pole bending.
(f) In the event of a tie, the horse declared the winner in the runoff must rerun the pattern within two seconds of its original time or the runoff must be held again. Penalty time will not apply to the two-second rule, but will apply to the final runoff time.
(g) The judge, at his/her discretion, may disqualify a contestant for excessive use of a bat, crop, whip or rope in front of the cinch.
BARREL PATTERN
The pattern at an NBHA show must meet the following conditions:
1) a minimum of 15 feet between each of the first two barrels and the side fence. 2) a minimum of 30 feet between the third barrel and the back fence. 3) a minimum of 30 feet between the time line and the first barrel. Local promoters and show organizers should use a barrel pattern that best fits their arena, subject to the above restrictions.
Barrel Racing is a timed rodeo event that demands some of the most athletic horses and dedicated riders in order to be successful in terms of financial earnings.
The sport in itself consists of horse and rider combining the horse's athletic ability and the rider's superb horsemanship skills in order to safely and successfully maneuver the horse around three 55 gallon closed end metal barrels placed in a cloverleaf pattern in the center of an arena at breakneck speeds. In timed rodeo events, the purpose is to make a run as fast as possible while the time is being clocked either by an electric eye, a device using a laser system to record times, or by an arena attendant or judge who manually takes the time using a keen eye and a flag to let a clocker know when to hit the timer stop.
The timer begins when horse and rider cross the start line, and ends when the barrel pattern has been successfully executed and horse and rider cross the finish line. The rider's time depends on several factors, most commonly the horse's physical and mental condition, the rider's horsemanship abilities, and the type of ground or footing (the quality, depth, content, etc. of the sand or dirt in the arena).
Some new rules you should be aware of for next Gymkhana:
TRAIL CLASS: Trail Class was also a great success here and we will make the rules more clear - you are judged on how well your horse completes the obstacles, and how clean it performs the task, as well as how obedient they are. You will receive faults for stepping on the line/poles. You have 3 tries to get through the obstacle. If you have a horse refuse to do the obstacle, or you pass or skip on an obstacle, you will have a refusal on your score. If you do not attempt to complete an obstacle you will be given faults or refusal faults depending on the circumstances. All decisions by the Officials are final. We want to make sure that we are helping our competitors by having them do the courses correctly and become stronger competitors no matter where they ride. Also, please remember that time is not the only factor and if a course is shown as a walking course you will be penalized for going at the wrong gait. Time only comes into it if we have clear rounds. We may go to a fault scoring process as well. Please ask if you have questions on scoring.
